Is it worth leasing an electric car UK?
Even though they’re now a common sight on our roads, electric vehicles are still evolving. EV technology is updated on a regular basis. So, if you buy an electric car, you could find yourself with a vehicle that has outdated tech and isn’t fit for purpose.
Leasing an EV removes this issue. You can choose a lease that’s as short as 24 months. This means you can regularly take out a new lease for a car that’s fitted with the latest tech and gives you the best possible driving experience.
Electric car leasing is also more affordable than purchasing, so it falls within the reach of more people. Simply find a deal that’s perfect for your budget and requirements and place an order or make an enquiry online.
You can also call us directly on 0161 814 9623 or email [email protected]
Is it good value to lease an electric car?
If you compare the purchase price of an electric vehicle with the cost of buying a petrol or diesel car, it’s more expensive. This is why many people choose to lease instead.
If you want to switch to electric without the high purchase cost, you can get an excellent deal on an EV lease. You make an initial payment that’s equivalent to a few months’ lease amount. You then make regular monthly payments until the end of the lease.
You can also cut fuel costs by as much as 50% by driving an electric car, which increases the value you get from the deal. Read our comprehensive electric car running costs guide for more information. In addition, your electric car lease also includes a manufacturer’s warranty that saves on repair costs and gives you peace of mind.
At VIP Gateway, we have special offer car leasing deals available on hybrid and electric cars. This makes the switch to hybrid or electric much more affordable for you.

Types of Hybrid and Electric
This type of car has a very small battery and a traditional petrol or diesel engine. The battery can’t be charged, so it can only be used to power the car for a short distance at a low speed. The traditional engine is used most of the time.
These vehicles have a traditional petrol or diesel engine. However, they also have a medium-sized battery that needs to be charged. For around the first 20-40 miles of a journey the car is powered by this battery and the petrol/diesel engine then takes over.
These vehicles are known as “pure electric” cars. The only power source is a large battery, and the car has an electric motor. These Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) create zero CO2 emissions and they’re cheaper to run than cars with a combustion engine.

Electric car lease FAQs
We have an excellent range of electric and hybrid lease cars available. All our deals are competitively priced, starting with our cheapest deals like the Gwm Ora Funky Cat Hatchback. Our team monitors the market each day, so you can be confident of getting the best deal on your electric or hybrid car lease.
Leasing is usually more affordable than buying a new electric vehicle outright. You make an initial payment and then several fixed monthly payments until the end of the lease. Speak to us about arranging payments that meet your requirements.
To charge your electric lease car at home, you’ll need to have a home charging point installed. You can use an EVSE supply cable for a 3 pin plug socket as a back up for emergencies.
On average, it costs around 9p per mile to charge an electric car (this rate is based on a home charging cost of 30 pence/kWh). This charging cost is 50% cheaper than the average cost of petrol which is approximately 18p per mile.
A plug-in hybrid can save you around 30% on fuel costs depending on how you use it. The typical range for the battery is 20-40 miles. After that you’ll be using petrol or diesel. If you don’t charge the battery each night, you’ll find yourself using traditional fuel most of the time.
HEVs don’t save you money on fuel because you can’t charge the battery. So, you still need to pay high petrol or diesel costs.
If you have a business lease on an electric car, there’s a 2% Benefit in Kind (BiK) tax incentive until the 2024/25 tax year. This rate increases to 3% for 2025/26, 4% for 2026/27, and 5% for 2027/28. If you live or work in the Greater London area, you also have the benefit of no Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges.
The manufacturing process for every car, including electric vehicles, has its own carbon footprint. The lithium-ion batteries used to power electric cars mean that factories producing them have a higher carbon footprint than those that produce petrol and diesel vehicles. However, as soon as you start to use an electric vehicle you begin to redress the balance because electric vehicles don’t produce any CO2 emissions.
Drive the car for long enough and you fully pay back the carbon deficit created during the manufacturing process. So, overall, an electric vehicle is more environmentally friendly. You can speed up the paying back of the carbon deficit by installing solar panels and using renewable energy to charge your vehicle’s battery or by choosing an 100% green tariff from your energy supplier.
If you have a driveway or garage at home, it makes sense to charge your vehicle using a home charging point overnight. Doing this means you access off-peak energy rates. You can also charge your vehicle in your surrounding neighbourhood at various establishments such as supermarkets, gyms, shopping centres, and carparks. Some of these charging stations are free to use while others have a charge attached.
If you’re travelling a long distance, the range of your car may not be sufficient for the entire journey. If this is the case, you can stop at a motorway service station, or other convenient location and use a rapid charger. You should be back on the road in about 20-45 minutes.
Most modern electric cars have batteries that will outlast the car itself. However, you may notice that the range decreases after a few years. Leasing an electric car rather than buying outright means you can avoid this problem by switching to a new car when your lease ends. You also have the benefit of a manufacturer’s warranty. So, if the battery does need to be replaced, which is highly unlikely, the replacement is covered free of charge.
An electric car normally has a battery range of around 175 to 400 miles, depending on the make and model. So, if you travel around 100 miles or less on your daily commute, you won’t have a problem. If you drive a longer distance, you’ll need to stop and charge the battery using a fast charging point.
Driving a plug-in hybrid car normally means you can travel for around 20-40 miles on battery power alone before the combustion engine kicks in. Make sure you charge your vehicle’s battery every night to benefit from this initial emissions free driving each day.
